UK Ancestry visa
This route is for Commonwealth citizens who are planning to come to the UK to work and can show that one of their grandparents was born in the UK.
To qualify for this visa, you need to fulfil the following requirements:
Ancestry documents: You need to provide your birth certificate and that of your grandparent to show that one of your grandparents was born in one of the following circumstances:
- in the UK, including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man
- before 31 March 1922 in what is now the Republic of Ireland
- on a British-registered ship or aircraft
You also need to provide additional documents as follows:-
- your marriage certificate or civil registration certificate if your spouse or civil partner wishes to join you
- marriage certificates for your parents and grandparents if they were married
- legal adoption papers if you or your parents are adopted
Employment: You need to provide evidence that you’re planning to work in the UK in the form of a job offer or a business plan if you’re self-employed.
Maintenance funds: You must provide evidence to show that you are able to maintain yourself and any dependants that will be joining you in the UK without recourse to public funds. This means that you need to have enough money to cater for yourselves in the UK.
Once the application is approved, you will be given an initial period of 5 years leave, which can be extended for a further period of 5 years. Upon completing 5 years leave to remain, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain followed by British citizenship.
Your family
Your family members (partner and children under 21) can apply to join you in the UK under this visa. Once the application is approved, they will be granted leave in line with your leave which can be extended, subject to meeting the requirements for leave to remain of the Immigration Rules. You may then be eligible to apply for settlement followed by British citizenship.
