British citizenship or naturalisation gives you the full rights of a UK citizen. There are several ways to become a British citizen depending on your visa route and your circumstances.
To apply for British citizenship, you need to meet the following key requirements:
- You must have been residing in the UK lawfully and continuously for at least 5 years before the date of your application with no absences totalling more than 450 days during those 5 years and no more than 90 days in the last 12 months.
- You must hold settlement (‘indefinite leave to remain’) in the UK for the last 12 months if you are a non-EEA national or permanent residence status for the last 12 months if you are an EEA national, unless an exemption applies.
- You must be of a good character, not in breach of the immigration rules or have committed any criminal offences during your lawful stay.
- You must demonstrate knowledge of English language and life in the UK by passing the Life in the UK test or having a speaking and listening qualification in English at level B1 or higher.
To apply for British citizenship, you need to complete the relevant form as suited to your respective category and submit it to the Home Office along with your supporting documents.
One your application has been approved; you will be required to attend a citizenship ceremony where you will be given your naturalisation certificate. You can then apply for a British passport.
